Everyone experiences stress throughout their life. Learning how to not let small things bother you can save time and energy. There are often small annoyances in our day that we could easily get upset over.
Although it is normal to feel anger occasionally, it is important to understand that not everything warrants such a strong emotion.
There are ways you can prevent yourself from feeling negative and stressed about the small things in life. By using some of these techniques, you can allow yourself to be happy.
Accept what you can’t control
It’s frustrating, but being angry isn’t going to help. There’s no point in getting angry about something you can’t fix or change. For example, you’re stuck in a traffic jam that’s going to make you late for school or work. It’s frustrating, but being angry won’t do any good.
If you’re bothered and upset about the traffic jam, you can either stay that way until it clears up, or you can accept it and listen to some of your favorite music while you wait.
If you want to save energy, stop worrying about things you can’t control and focus on what you can.
Put Things in Perspective
A tip on how to not get annoyed about small things is to think about how big the issue really is. If someone accidentally spills something on you, it’s not the end of the world. Taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture can help you keep your cool when things don’t go your way.
It’s important to remember that if something is wrong now, it’s not wrong forever. Things can be fixed.
There’s also the rule that says things won’t matter in five years. I think a year is long enough to worry about something. If it won’t affect you in a year, don’t worry about it for more than a minute.
I understand that you feel like it matters a lot right now, but in the next moment and all the moments after that, it’s not going to bother you as much. So why not just let that small thing go now and get a head start?
Let Go of Attachment to Objects and People
The root of all suffering according to Buddhism is our addictive behavior. This is something you will realize if you really think about it.
When we become attached to things or people, we begin to think that they are what make us happy. We assume that without them, we will be miserable. So we try to spend as much time as possible with the object or person.
And that’s not always the best way to spend your time…
The thing that you think will make you happy is just a temporary fix to make you feel better. It might work in the short term, but it’s not a real solution.
Being in a relationship means constantly thinking about the other person, dedicating time to them, and at some point losing focus on reality.
You need to release your grip on everything early on. You can do this by discovering the root of the problem – why you feel empty.
Here are other things to do to get over the need of being with someone all the time just to feel better:
- spend more time alone
- Try to enjoy the time you spend on your own.
- Do something you love – sing, write, take a walk in nature, listen to music, or just enjoy the silence and meditate.
- realize you’re complete.
You will be confident in yourself and knowing that you don’t need someone else’s validation to be happy.
Journal Your Frustrations
If you’re carrying your journal around with you and something bothers you, you can pull it out and write about it. It’s a form of self-care that can help you to move on from thinking about the problem.
Forgive Yourself For Your Mistakes
Something that has been bothering you for a long time can be resolved by forgiving yourself.
We all make mistakes and are not perfect. Nobody is perfect. We are all trying to do our best with the knowledge and skills we have.
One way to mitigate the negative impact of making a mistake is to learn from it and identify areas where you can improve in the future.
Thinking back on your past choices will assist you in making wiser choices in the future.
Let Go of Desires
Many of us have a lot of desires these days. We want to travel to different places, buy the latest products, meet new people, and have more of everything.
At that point, all of the stuff we have can start to overwhelm us.
If we have more stuff, it doesn’t help our inner happiness and peace. It can actually end up making our lives more difficult and complex.
Often, the things we desire serve no real purpose. Consider what it is you are wanting. You will likely find that you are craving things that will not improve your life in any way, but will instead provide you with momentary pleasure and comfort.
We often mistakenly believe that we need something when we only want it.
Before making a list of things you need, take a step back and evaluate what you truly need. More often than not, people think they need more things than they actually do.
Because we are constantly bombarded with new desires, we never feel content. It’s as if we are constantly chasing our tails and not accomplishing anything meaningful.
Focus On Gratitude
Studies have shown that gratitude leads to happiness. For this reason, it is important to focus on the things you are thankful for.
Step back for a moment and think about all the things that are going well in your day. Consider all the things you’re happy about in your life. This will help you change your focus from feeling annoyed to feeling happy.
Laugh Things Off
If you want to be unbothered by someone, try to put yourself in their shoes and see things from their perspective. I find that often times, when I understand where someone is coming from, I can be more patient with them and less bothered by them.
Sometimes people will make jokes at your expense, or intentionally try to make you feel bad. I learned in high school to laugh at the jokes people would make about me and not let it bother me.
I don’t need to be upset about what other people say about me because I know my own identity and that’s what’s important.
Let Go Of Judgment
When you judge others, you might be critical of something they have done, angry with them, or talking about them behind their back.
Here are some signs that you’re doing it, even if you don’t realize it. Most of the time, it’s because you have big expectations for what other people should do or say. This can be due to insecurity, and you try to mask it by pointing out other people’s mistakes.
Here are a few things to consider before you judge:
- you can’t change the situation or that person by judging. Instead, try to help him/her;
- the situation is probably much different from what you’re thinking;Â
- by talking about what others do wrong, you’re actually showing bad sides of your character;
- you have no idea what’s going on in this person’s mind or life and even if he’s doing something you don’t like, it may be the right thing for him or the only thing he can do right now;
Try to catch yourself before you start judging and ask yourself why you’re doing it. If you know the whole story and how judging will help, then maybe you can stop yourself.
Use Music To Calm Yourself
I’ve always found music to be a good way to help deal with negative feelings. If you have headphones, you can listen to your favorite songs to cheer yourself up.
Let Go of The Past
When we keep looking back, life gets hard and heavy.
We all have things we want to leave in the past, but sometimes it feels like those things are weighing us down. It’s like we’re carrying a big backpack full of old memories, relationships, moments we want to go back to, negative events, emotional conversations, people we’ve lost, old lovers, etc.
You may also bring old aspects of your life into your current situation, such as a former job, a friend you no longer see, or the house you grew up in.
The emotional weight of the situation is extremely heavy and difficult to manage; it feels like the only way to be free from the problem is to abandon it.
It is important to let the past go because if you haven’t it will interfere with your present and future.
You should also be aware that you cannot change anything that has happened to you in the past. You can only learn from your mistakes and ensure that you do not repeat them in the future.
Make sure to take deep breaths, put down your backpack, and focus on the present moment. Then go out and make new memories.
Let Go of The Future
We’re scared of what we don’t know. That makes us anxious and we imagine a lot of different scenarios in our head.
If we constantly worry about things that may never happen, we create unnecessary stress in our lives. This not only wastes our time and energy, but inhibits us from taking action in the present moment that could lead to a better future.
If we stop worrying about the past or the future, we can live in the present and be at peace. We can enjoy what is happening now and make the most of it.
You will also need to have faith that things will work out well and let them be. Then you will find pleasure in each moment and your future will be bright.
