I learned a new term today, and it is something that can help your shoulders by lightening up your handbag AND can save you money – it is called DEPOTTING.
Dana Oliver presented the idea in a Huffington Post article today
How many different makeup items do you have in your bag? Many women carry several lipsticks, lip balm, eyeliner, mascara, etc. It can get pretty heavy carting all of that around!
Depotting is when you remove a makeup product from its original container and put it into a different, smaller package. You get rid of the excess packaging (there to make it “look” nice) and put it into something very basic.
You do need to be careful what method you choose for this extraction! If you use candles to release the goods, you can create toxic fumes if the container is plastic. You also need to exercise a lot of caution if you use something sharp to remove the product.
And do keep in mind, you can buy refills rather than taking product out of its pretty packaging.
Makeupaddict.org has several tutorials that walk you through how to depot various types of makeup at http://www.makeupaddict.org/depot.html if you are interested in learning the techniques.
You can also find several tutorials on YouTube.com – just do a search for DEPOTTING.
And if you are looking for a palette to store it in after you have retrieved the product – try zPalette. This company was started by Zena Shteysel, a make up artist for film and television who spent years trying to organize and streamline the products that she used.
Her palettes are empty, customizable magnetic containers that can be used to fit whatever you want!
Oh – and a word of warning about foundations – they often have some volatile ingredients and are packaged in a specific type of material because of that – you may want to leave those where you found them!
