192 countries are participating in today’s Earth Day, according to the Earth Day Network.
So what is Earth Day all about? Lowering your Carbon footprint, planting trees, preventing erosion. The earth that supports us so well deserves some reciprocity, don’t you think?
I live close to Boulder, Colorado, one of the tree-hugging mecas of the United States and I have to admit that I fit right in. I love recycling and most anything that is green!
Do you remember the old ad campaign about stopping litter, where the Indian looked at all the rubbish, and looked at the camera with a tear in his eye? I cried every time I saw those commercials…
Earth Day started in 1970, amidst war protests and the death of Jimi Hendrix. There wasn’t much emphasis on the environment then, but after an up-close look at an oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin (Gaylord Nelson) got some assistance and promoted a “National Teach-in on the Environment.”
20 million Americans went out to protest oil spills, extinction of wildlife and pollution and to promote a healthy environment. Earth Day was born.
in 1990 Earth Day went global, bringing together 141 countries.
