I think that everyone who aspires to become a better “me” understands the significance of brain fitness.
Here are a couple of interesting articles that emphasize not only the need for a regular program of brain fitness but also the new trend in providing resources and tools to the general public. Can you say “Brain-Mart?”
Picture of Health: Marbles The Brain Store: exercise for the mind …
Studies have shown that exercising the brain can help with memory, analytical skills and other cognitive abilities that decline with age. A store that opened at The Mall in Columbia this past summer sets out to help us do just that! The more you exercise your brain by challenging it to do new things, the more neurological connections you create there.
Likewise, an unhealthy lifestyle can almost eradicate the gains made by serious brain training.
Poor Lifestyle Causes Brain Shrinkage, Mental Decline
Does a lousy lifestyle really lead to mental decline. Several recent studies say “absolutely!”
A study done in Japan (including just under 800 men and women over 8 years) by researchers from the Center for Development of Advanced Medicine for Dementia concluded that shrinkage of the frontal lobe of the brain was LESS if adults moved around more during the day (start using those pedometers!!). And the HIGHER the level of activity the better the results.
This has a significant impact on your quality of life, as this is the part of the brain that is involved in problem-solving, memory, judgement, personality and emotions. Not to mention the fact that moving around more can decrease likelihood of dementia, something that all of us would like to avoid.
Another study, which was published in the journal ‘Neurology.’ was carried out on people in their 70’s –Â Neuroprotective lifestyles and the aging brain. The conclusion of this study was that physical activity is associated with less brain atrophy, although they were not clear about the actual mechanism involved.
