There is a lot of press about free radicals, but what are free radicals and what do they do? According to Anne Chapas of the New York University School of Medicine a free radical is an unstable molecule, which resulted from a pair of electrons being separated.
What is so bad about that you may ask? Well, the problem is that the electron wants to be paired up again, so it will go find another one and steal it. If it happens to pick a healthy cell, it leaves that cell damaged.
This goes on millions of times, all day long, from a multitude of factors including plain old cell metabolism.
The results of free radicals for you can mean dull skin with lines and sagging, as well as inflammation, cardiovascular disease and more.
You can fight against this damage by use of antioxidants, both directly on your skin and internally, including Vitamins C and E, coenzyme Q10, and various botanicals.
Included in the list of foods that can help fight free radicals are dark chocolate and red wine… and of course brightly colored fruits and vegetables!
