Things You Should Start Doing For Yourself

How often do you take care of yourself? One of the most important relationships in your life is the one you have with yourself.

It’s important to make yourself a priority sometimes and put your own happiness first. You spend a lot of time giving to others and your work. Life gets busy, so it’s important to make time for yourself too.

At times, you may agree to do things you don’t want to do.

There are days when you can’t help but be hard on yourself for a silly mistake you’ve made.

The fear of being judged by others is preventing you from doing things you’ve always wanted to do. Maybe you’ve been told by the world that it’s “too late” for you to make a change, try new things, or stir things up.

I’m here to tell you that it’s not too late to make a change. All big changes start with a single step or a small change in mindset.

Start letting go of unnecessary ideals

Weigh your thoughts against whether they help or hinder your growth; take back control of your mind. If a thought is causing you stress or holding you back, let it go. This isn’t giving up, it’s learning to not be so attached to particular people, outcomes, or situations. Focus on what matters and what will help you move forward today.

Learn to say “no”

How often do you agree to do something even though you don’t really want to? It’s normal to feel guilty when you turn something down, but it’s important to learn how to set boundaries.

Start facing your problems, head on

It can be really tough mentally to have something hanging over your head all the time. It’s the last thing you think of before you go to bed at night, and the first thing you think of when you wake up in the morning.

Sit down with a piece of paper and ask yourself, “What is one small step that I can take RIGHT NOW to start resolving this?” Problems don’t resolve themselves, so don’t be afraid to take action, even if it’s just a small step. Acknowledge the problem and take action instead of waiting until the last minute.

Make yourself a priority

It’s not selfish to take care of yourself, it’s necessary. In order to keep going, sometimes you have to push through even when you’re tired. You might give a lot of yourself to others, but how much do you give to yourself?

It can be tough to come to the realization that your needs matter, but it’s true. You can be a parent, a partner, a spouse, you’re running or starting a business, you’re a brother, sister, maybe you’re taking care of a loved one. Don’t stop giving yourself to others, but realize that you can’t pour from an empty cup. Grab lunch with a friend. Read a few pages of a book first thing in the morning, grab a cup of coffee from your favorite place, on your way home from work.

Your needs and feelings matter. It’s not selfish to take care of yourself, it’s necessary.

Be gentle with yourself

Think about the consequences of your words, before you speak, and make a decision to use affirming, positive statements.

Be mindful of how you speak to yourself- do you tend to tear yourself down when things don’t go your way? How often do you berate yourself for mistakes you’ve made? Be more compassionate with yourself; speak to yourself with the same kindness you would extend to a friend or a little sister.

Be more mindful of the words you use, especially when they’re directed at or about yourself. Pause to consider the impact of your words before you speak, and make a commitment to using language that is affirming and positive.

Put your heart and soul into the things you do

There is a big difference between feeling exhausted and feeling fulfilled. Life is short. Invest your time in activities that matter to you. And don’t wait around! Too often we wait because we think we need to find something new or different to be passionate about. That’s not true. If you want more passion in your life right now, act accordingly right now!

Put your whole heart and soul into the next thing you do. Not into tomorrow’s opportunities, but the opportunity right in front of you. Not into tomorrow’s tasks, but today’s tasks. Not into tomorrow’s run, but today’s run. Not into tomorrow’s conversations, but today’s conversations.

I’m absolutely certain you have plenty in your life right now that’s worth your time, energy, and passionate focus. You have people and circumstances in your life that need you as much as you need them. Don’t wait any longer! There is no tomorrow. Give your all to what you have right in front of you! Make it a part of you, and great things will happen FOR you, TO you, and BECAUSE of you.

Learn to be happy for others

A lot of people find it difficult to be happy for others when they see them catch a break, especially when they’ve been working hard for years with no success. I always try to remind myself that this is just proof that it can be done. Seeing people who have accomplished what you want to accomplish can be discouraging, but it’s important to learn from them and stay focused on your own goals.

Start forgiving and learn to let go

It is important to learn to forgive not only yourself but also others. Holding grudges does not do you any good so try to let them go. Forgiving yourself for bad decisions can be hard, but it takes courage to do so. Be brave and learn to let go of the past so that you can move on.

Work on small goals, every single day

It’s important to keep growing and learning. Making small changes can lead to big results, and every major change starts with a single step.

Start noticing the beauty of small, everyday things

You can choose to be happy and excited every day, not just waiting for something big to happen. There are beautiful and amazing things happening all the time, you just have to learn to notice them.

Once in a while, take a mental day off

Although we can’t necessarily take a whole day off, maybe we can take a few hours during the week to de-stress. Consider meditating, writing in a journal, reading, or spending time outdoors enjoying nature. It’s important to disconnect from technology and the world around us every once in a while.

Be yourself

Your life is yours to live. Don’t let anyone else control it. Be yourself and don’t try to be like anyone else. You are unique and there is no one like you. Don’t listen when people tell you that you’re too old or it’s too late for you to do something great with your life.

Start stretching yourself just beyond the edge of comfort

If you want to make progress, you need to be willing to be uncomfortable. It’s better to spend 10 high-quality minutes stretching yourself than an hour feeling comfortable. You should do something every day that is outside of your comfort zone. This may be uncomfortable, but it is necessary in order to improve.

Without this discomfort, you will only experience things that are within your comfort zone, which is not very much. This cycle prevents you from reaching your goals. We often do not reach our full potential because we do not make the right choices. We should surround ourselves with things and people that inspire us to be better. Reading is also important for growth. Our lives are determined by the choices we make.

You should take deep breaths so you can be mindful and collect lessons for the future.

It is easy to believe that one decision, outcome, or event is very important, especially when you are experiencing strong emotions. However, it is important to remember to stay calm when things do not go as planned. Your good or bad results over time are always the result of many small decisions, outcomes, and events. We all make mistakes sometimes.

What is important to remember is that one mistake does not define us. We can learn from our mistakes and become wiser. We must continue to strive for success, even when we experience failures. Our best stories come from overcoming our biggest challenges.

Cherish and nurture your relationships

Many of us have close friends or know amazing people that we haven’t contacted in years. Life gets busy and we have to focus on things like school, family, and careers which makes it easy to forget about the great relationships we have with the people we love. If you don’t already, start taking time out of your week to have lunch or call someone you love. The people in our lives make it great and we should be sharing our happiness with them.

Start doing more things that scare you

The only way to grow is by getting out of your comfort zone and trying new things. Even though it can be scary, it is also the only way to become courageous. If there are things you have been putting off doing or trying for years, don’t let fear stop you.

Start focusing inward more often

Whenever you need a moment of clarity, try to focus inward. Remember that your thoughts have an impact on other people’s lives and that by bringing clarity into your own life, you make the world a better place.

Create a regular gratitude practice

I’ve always known I should be grateful for what I have, but I never realized how much I took for granted until I started practicing gratitude every day. Once I started really paying attention to all the good things in my life, I realized how great my life actually is, even though it has its struggles. There’s always something to be grateful for, no matter how bad your circumstances are.
